What To Do When Things Don’t Go To Plan.

Do you ever get those days or even weeks where things are popping up all over the place and your first made plans get pushed to the way side because you have other things that you now have to deal with?

Yeah, I thought so! That is life unfortunately. Things will rarely run smoothly and bits and pieces will pop up along with a few curve balls here and there. But what do you do when things don’t go as planned?

There are a couple of ways you can approach the chaos that is life sometimes…

Make some ‘if, then’ plans

If, then plans are exactly as they seem. If this happens, then I will do 'X’ or if i can’t do ‘X’, then I will do ‘Y’

If you know that your work can get hectic at times and that things can crop up at any moment that could mean a change in your plans for that day or the rest of your week, the these will be prefect for you…

‘If I can’t make it to the gym today, then I will go tomorrow instead.’

‘If I can’t go for my run today, then I will walk home from work.’

‘If I go out for this work lunch, then I will make a high protein dinner with veggies tonight.’

Have a plan B

Using your weekly planner, when you are planning out your week and plotting in your training sessions. Try marking a few plan B sessions. That way if something comes up, you can opt for one of your back up sessions for the week. If it is impossible to schedule in some back up sessions, have a look at your training schedule and utilise the flexible training plans and reduce your number of sessions for that week.

Have some meals prepared and frozen for a quick dinner if you get in late from work, it will mean that you are still prioritising your goals and eating a nutritious meal rather than ordering in.

Don’t stress

If something is out of your control and your actions will have no impact on the outcome, then don’t stress it. You cannot influence it, so stop trying to. Instead look at the factors that you CAN control. This can be easier said than done I know, but if things don’t go to plan it’s not the be all and end all. A day or even a week whether things are not optimal or haven’t been as productive as you would like will not mean that you are not progressing. All of these experiences are chances for you to learn; ‘how could I deal with this better next time?’. There will always be bumps in the road. It is how we react to them that ultimately dictates how successful we are.
